LEADER’S FIELD GUIDE
Who hasn’t shouted, “I wish I had more time!” Even for things we don’t want to do, like taxes, we usually want more time. We especially want more time while on vacation and during those precious moments between a dark red sunset and the iridescent-blue and black of twilight. Guess what! Every four years we do get more time. According to Time & Date, “it takes Earth approximately 365.242189 days to circle once around the Sun.” Each year, we collect an extra 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds and blow it all at once on February 29th.
That’s one extra day for each of us! Let’s break it down: you get twenty-four hours for the day minus eight hours for sleep (probably more than you’re used to) minus two hours for eating and making your bed… That leaves fourteen leap hours. Just imagine the possibilities! Now, what is it that you really want to do or be? What has kept you from doing it? Perhaps, it is one or a combination of the reasons below?
- Discouraged: If you have a novel and innovative goal, you may interpret the confusion of others as discouragement. Your inner circle of influencers means well, but may not understand how purposeful and meaningful your goal really is.
- Safe: Safe goals establish and maintain control and normalcy, yet they are restrictive and limiting. A stretch goal is a target just beyond immediate reach, but probable especially with a little focus, work, and time. Stretching allows for unlimited possibilities.
- Excused: What it is you really want to do or be, again? Close your eyes and imagine it! Put the list of rehearsed excuses on hold for a moment. (I’ll wait…) What would it take to fulfill the vision? What’s challenging? What’s rewarding?
- Scared: Let’s acknowledge that if you weren’t scared, you may have accomplished your goal four years ago. It’s time to decide if you are just going to give up and acknowledge you’ve be thwarted, or move forward and pursue it with fear!
Remember, things can seem unlikely, and that’s okay. Be realistic about the small steps. Small steps are hard to define if you won’t even begin to dream. Be encouraged, stretched, committed, and courageous. Fear eventually gets bored on long, daunting journeys and falls by the wayside. Isn’t it time to take the leap?! Just imagine the possibilities! Oh, and what if you added up all the hours in your sphere of influence? What’s possible, then?
Note: Did you know that February 30th has been observed more than once? Really! →
